The concept is rather widespread. Both Austria and Switzerland (and some others) have plenty of snow resorts with names carrying: bad-, bain-, and even therme-.
Such places besides (or "instead") orgiastic snow happening offer great variety of relax and spa treatments in thermal centres.
Even so top hotels usually have their own facilities much more gorgeous and spacious in most cases. They could be available for outsiders as well depending on the hotel policy.
Who was the first to combine skiing and bathing we could hardly determine at present. Thermal resorts in general have by far longer history than those for snow riders. Some of them as declared date back even to antique ages. That farseeing Roman architect probably already knew something if he founded a prototype at the place we know as Leukerbad now.
However, recreational effect of the combination is quite real as long as skiing is in fact active and muscles (and entire body) need to restore. What exactly has a bigger impact: high temperature, hydro massage or may be thermal water – I could hardly say. Nevertheless, full combat readiness the next morning is a proved matter!
But the real synergy is the following. This is a natural treasure for tour agents and various resort oriented business! Such place could welcome even absolutely mixed group without carrying about how many are going and (more important) able to ski. Even those who won’t dare to try their legs on the snow will have at least respectable entertainment . And the rhythm of it will be very similar to the beach type undoubtedly one of the highest popularity.
This additional appeal is for sure the main reason that many of pure ski resorts acquired in due course comparable facilities. They could be referred to as thermal and spa but not always and not at full length. It’s rather difficult to attach appropriate antiquity as well. Furthermore, such implementation alone doesn’t make the resort an all-season one. Anyway it seems that there is no alternative. A large proportion of visitors are interested first of all in that kind of après ski.
On the other hand the importance of other more traditional après ski options is being automatically reduced. Not every barfly or disco geek is able to perform something after exhausting bathing relax. Frankly there are few resorts with really exciting night life. So the spoken combination seems to be more than harmonious.
